So raise your hand if you believe Trump will face consequences stemming from the January 6 hearings. Anyone? Buehler… Buehler? (I know, showing my age:-) Well, let’s say there are 10 of you out there – four of you might be raising your hands right now. Clearly the minority which is not the ‘will’ of the majority of people. In a recent NPR / PBS NewsHour / Marist poll, the same poll the 6 in 10 stat came from, 9 in 10 Democrats, and about half of Independents think Trump should be charged with a crime. While only 10% of Republicans, always out of step and tone deaf to reality, think the mango monster of an ex-President should face charges.
Me personally? not holding my breath. I am a realist with nihilistic tendencies. I threw out the rose colored glasses eons ago. Politicians, rich people, powerful people, privileged people rarely face any real consequences. An small sampling includes the likes of:
Epstein & Maxwell’s Johns… several named and known – no arrests, no investigations. The only one dragged through it, not counting the exception to my theory, Ghislaine Maxwell, was Prince Andrew – oh and of course, not an American. Snopes reported in August of 2020, “…several “lists” exist associated with the Epstein case, including the names of people who have flown on his private plane and the people listed in Epstein’s “black book” directory. However, these lists have been in the public domain since well before the most recent court documents were unsealed.”
Matt Gaetz our child trafficking piece of Senator. He’s been under investigation since the Summer of 2020. The story broke in March of 2021. Gaetz made a bizarre coverup story to the FBI about some ‘extortion scheme’, to you know, confuse the issue? His wingman, Joel Greenberg, got convicted. However as of May 2020 Goldberg has yet to be sentence, the sentencing hearing postponed for the THIRD time in May of 2022. The pervert senator, oh he’s just fine. Still sitting in Congress – consequence zero.
Rapist Robert H. Richards the IV CONVICTED in 2008 of raping his three year old daughter. YUCK! The judge sentenced him to eight years of probation. The judge believed Richards wouldn’t ‘fare well behind bars’. Truly a disgusting sorry state of affairs. It only gets worse. in 2014 he was again accused of sexual molestation of his son. He is still free as a bird and was never charged with the abuse of the second child.
2008 Mortgage Crisis – I mean MOVIES have been made about the corruption and who was responsible. The result? Well according to Financial Times, Iceland convicted 25 people. Spain found 11 people guilty and convicted them. Ireland managed 7. The US? ONE, Kareem Serageldin a trader at Credit Suisse. A trader…hmmm. He got 2 years and 6 months for being involved in a conspiracy to falisfy books and records. A conspiracy you say? Conspiracies by definition involve more than one person. Huh?
ok so wanna do some juxtaposition? Under Bill Clinton and Joe Biden, the three strikes law came onto the scene resulting in mayhem. The law adopted by some 28 states lead to ridiculous sentencing, prison overcrowding, and surprise was particularly hard on black and brown people.
the ACLU reports the following cases.
Willie James Sauls a 37 year old Texas man was sentenced to 45 years for snatching an old ladies purse. It’s like declaring, rehabilitation isn’t a thing. The judge said the sentence was warranted due to Sauls’ prior convictions and his inability to fix his behavior.
In Mississippi, 41 year old Anthony Crutcher sold $40 work of cocaine. His sentence 60 years. This sentence again was made because of Crutcher’s two earlier convictions for non-violent drug crimes.
But wait there’s more…
Timothy Jackson a black man with a sixth grade education and drug addiction problems stole $159 coat. Because of the habitual offender law he was sentenced to life with no possibility of parole.
And finally, this is so stupid sad. Todd Hannigan was addicted to opiates. He struggled for years with his addiction and was in and out of jail several times. In 2009 he decided to end it all. He went out and bought Vicodin and beer, enough to make him dead. The cops caught him before he could consume said pills. He was charged with possession of the Vicodin and an open inbox in public. Because of the habitual offender laws he was sentenced to 15 years. Really?
While this story is nothing new. I imagine since the beginning of the beginning, some people get into terrible trouble and were unfairly penalized because of their status, while others do terrible deeds and skate. I just had to rant about it cause I am feeling a little hopeless about things and at least I can say it out loud.
